What is SillyTavern?

SillyTavern is a free, open-source chat interface released under AGPL-3.0. You install it on your own computer, or on Android, and point it at a language model. It does not host anything and has no model of its own. It also sets no content rules: the docs note that hosted models are often censored, so what you can write depends on the backend you connect. With a local model, nothing leaves your machine. With a paid API, you pay that provider directly at their rates. For roleplay, it reads character cards and adds lorebooks, group chats and personas.

You can hook SillyTavern up to local backends, AI Horde, Tabby, KoboldAI and any OpenAI-compatible API.

World Info lorebooks

World Info entries trigger on keywords and add background facts to the prompt. This keeps long campaigns consistent even on models with small context.

Group chats and personas

You can run several characters in one scene and switch between your own personas. Data Bank RAG lets you attach documents for the model to draw from.

Scripting and extensions

A scripting engine and an extension system let you automate actions and add features. No hosted roleplay site gives you this much control.

The catch

You have to install it, which means Node.js and some comfort with setup steps. It is useless on its own: without a backend, there is nothing to chat with. Running a good local model needs a capable GPU, and hosted APIs cost money and often carry their own filters. There is no official support channel and no public reviews, so when something breaks, you rely on the docs and the community.

Final verdict

SillyTavern is the right pick if you want total privacy and full control and you are willing to set it up. The software is free and has no message limits; your only cost is the model. If you just want to open a website and start chatting, a hosted site will be far less work. If you already run local models, this is the front-end to use.
