What is ComfyUI?

ComfyUI is an open-source app where you build image and video pipelines by wiring nodes together on a canvas. You can install it on Windows, macOS or Linux and run it offline, or rent GPU time on Comfy Cloud. On your own machine, what you can make depends on the models you load. The Cloud terms ban CSAM, non-consensual intimate imagery and impersonation, and they say nothing about adult content in general. The GitHub repo has a very large following, so you will find plenty of help and shared workflows.

Key features

Any open model you want

ComfyUI is not tied to one model. It handles Flux, Qwen Image, SD3.5, SDXL, SD 1.5 and Wan video, and you can load any checkpoint or LoRA you download. On Comfy Cloud, the Creator plan lets you import your own LoRAs.

Editing inside the workflow

Inpainting, outpainting, masks, ControlNets, upscaling and model merging are all built in. You can also chain image-edit models such as Flux Kontext. That means you can fix a hand, change a background or upscale a final image without leaving the app.

Consistent characters, your way

There is no “save this character” button. You keep a face the same with LoRAs, reference conditioning or image-edit models. It takes setup, but once a workflow works you can reuse it for a whole set.

Local privacy, or a cloud that does not train

A local run never leaves your computer. If you use Comfy Cloud, the terms say you keep rights to your inputs and that Comfy will not train models on your inputs or outputs.

The catch

The node graph is hard at first. Expect to spend real time on installs, model files and broken workflows before your first good image. Local use needs a strong GPU. Comfy Cloud bills active GPU seconds in credits, does not publish a per-image price, and unused credits do not roll over. The terms also give no minimum age and no age check.

Final verdict

If you own a capable GPU and do not mind learning, nothing else in this category gives you as much freedom for as little money. You pick the model, you keep the files, and the software is free. If you lack the hardware, Comfy Cloud at $20 a month is a fair middle step, but watch the credit use. If you just want a quick explicit image from a text box, a hosted generator will get you there faster.
