The short version

These two tools solve the same problem in opposite ways. SpicyChat AI is a hosted site: sign up, pick a bot, chat. SillyTavern is free software you install yourself, and it has no model until you connect one. For most people who are willing to do some setup, SillyTavern is the better choice. It costs nothing, sets no content rules, keeps chats on your machine with a local model, and gives you more control over memory and scene tools. SpicyChat AI is the right pick if you want zero setup and a ready-made bot catalog, and you can live with its rules and small context on the cheap plans.

Price

SillyTavern is free and open source under AGPL-3.0. Your only cost is the model. Run one locally and you pay nothing beyond the hardware, though good local models need a capable GPU. AI Horde is a free backend, and paid APIs bill you directly at their own rates. There is no subscription and no message cap from SillyTavern itself.

SpicyChat AI has a free tier plus three paid plans. The cheapest, Get A Taste, is $5.95 a month. True Supporter costs $19.95, and the top plan, I’m All In, costs $29.95. Prices went up on 8 September 2026. Paid plans give unlimited messages and skip the waiting line. The free tier’s message cap is not published.

The real cost difference is context. On SpicyChat AI, free and Get A Taste are capped at 4K tokens, True Supporter gets 8K and only I’m All In gets 32K. With SillyTavern, context depends on the model you connect, so you choose the trade-off instead of buying a tier.

Features

SpicyChat AI has strong scene tools for a hosted site. Rulebooks track meters such as a relationship level, lorebooks add world facts on keywords, and director mode steers group chats with several bots. The model table lists DeepSeek, Kimi and Qwen options, and some free models support up to 32K, though your plan’s cap still applies. You can use it on the web or on Android; iOS has no App Store app.

SillyTavern covers the same ground and goes further. World Info lorebooks trigger on keywords, group chats run several characters at once, and personas let you switch who you play. Data Bank RAG lets you attach documents, and a scripting engine plus extensions let you automate actions and add features. Backends include local models, AI Horde, KoboldAI, Tabby and any OpenAI-compatible API, and you can switch models per chat. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android.

What SillyTavern does not have is a built-in bot catalog or a model. You bring character cards and a backend. SpicyChat AI hands you both on day one.

Privacy and trust

SillyTavern does not host anything. With a local model, nothing leaves your computer. With a hosted API, your chats go to that provider under its policy, and SillyTavern’s docs warn that many hosted models are censored. Support is community-only: no official channel exists, so fixes come from the docs and other users.

SpicyChat AI’s privacy policy is silent on two points: whether chats train models and whether they are encrypted. Third-party age checks with a video selfie or ID apply in the UK, France, Italy, Australia and 26 US states. The guidelines ban non-consent, incest, step-family content, minors and real people, even on NSFW-labeled bots. Trustpilot reviewers complain about the paywall, queues and moderation.

Who should pick which

Pick SillyTavern if you want privacy, open rules and full control, and you can handle an install. It is the stronger tool overall, and it is free. If you have no strong GPU, start with AI Horde to learn the interface, then add a paid API if you want better replies.

Pick SpicyChat AI if you want to chat in a browser or on Android in the next minute, like browsing ready-made bots, and want rulebooks and director mode without setup. Read the content rules first, and budget for a higher plan if your scenes run long.

Questions people ask

Is SillyTavern really free?

The software is free and open source under AGPL-3.0. What you pay depends on the model: a local model costs nothing beyond your own hardware, AI Horde is free, and a hosted API bills you at its own rates.

Which one is more private?

SillyTavern with a local model, because every message stays on your computer. SpicyChat AI's privacy policy is silent on training and on encryption.

Which one has fewer content rules?

SillyTavern sets no rules of its own, so the limits come from the model you connect. SpicyChat AI requires an NSFW label on explicit bots and bans non-consent, incest, step-family content, minors and real people.

Which is easier to start with?

SpicyChat AI. You open the website or the Android app and chat on the free tier. SillyTavern needs an install with Node.js and a model connection before you can send a message.
