What is AI Dungeon?

AI Dungeon is a story game from Latitude. You start from a scenario, type what your character does or says, and the model writes what happens next. It is closer to an old text adventure than a chat app: you steer a plot, not a single character. There are three content settings, Safe, Moderate and Mature. When you pick Mature, the help center says the model does not hold back on adult or violent output, with one hard filter that blocks sexual content involving minors. It runs on the web, on iOS and as a Windows app on Steam, and there is a free tier.

Story Cards and Plot Components

Story Cards hold facts about characters, places and items, and pull them into the prompt when they come up. Plot Components hold the bigger rules of your world. Together they help a long campaign stay consistent when the model’s own memory runs out.

Latitude lists the context size for each plan. Free models get 2k to 4K tokens. Paid tiers step up through 8k, 16k, 32k and 64k, and add DeepSeek and larger Ultra models with monthly credits.

There are hundreds of user-made starting points, so you do not need to write a setup from nothing.

The catch

The free context is very small. A 2k to 4K window forgets the start of a scene fast, so free play leans hard on Story Cards. Stories are encrypted, but the encryption FAQ says the keys sit on Latitude’s servers, so this is not end-to-end. According to a third-party review, new accounts start with the Improve the AI training option switched on. The age gate is a single self-confirmation when you switch on Mature, and the Steam rating is Mixed.

Final verdict

AI Dungeon suits you if you want a guided story game with real world-building tools and you do not mind paying for context. Journey at $14.99 a month is the first tier where long adventures hold together. If you only want one-on-one character chat, other sites give you more for free. If privacy matters, switch off the training setting first and remember Latitude holds the encryption keys.
